LSU’s Sigma Chi Fraternity is getting attention from 2 drug-related events within the past 2 months.
A fraternity member named Sawyer Reed died on Oct. 17 from an accidental overdose at his off-campus apartment. The chapter was also placed on suspension Nov. 3 for allegations of hazing and drug use at the fraternity house.
Tiger TV spoke with Sigma Chi fraternity member George Bevan about his friend’s death.
“We didn’t really know that he was dealing with that,” said Bevan. “From what I heard it was just a one time thing.”
According to the Baton Rouge police report, investigators found drugs, syringes, scales and other paraphernalia in his room. The report also said he had needle holes in his arms and feet.
Bevan said rumors about a connection between Reed’s death and the fraternity’s suspension are not true.
“I really don’t think that it would be in Sawyer’s nature and personality to be selling anything and quite frankly I don’t know how much he did,” said Bevan.
BRPD also confirmed that both of the events are unrelated.
Bevan said his friend’s death brings up an important issue for college students.
“People who you would never suspect are dabbling in that kind of stuff actually could be,” said Bevan. “If they are, somebody needs to step in.”
Reed’s type of drug use is unknown and his toxicology results are pending.
