When’s the last time you went to a 7-piece jazz show featuring songs like No Diggity, an entire song made up of a chord progression composed by audience members (whoever posed the flat 2 was on point that night), and a gospel style quartet of audience members singing perfect harmonies with every cover song?
Super specific question, but if you haven’t witnessed any of those things, you: One, need to go to better shows and two, clearly weren’t at the Shaun Martin show last night at Chelsea’s. I can confidently say it was one of the more refreshing shows I’ve ever been to.
Shaun has been a wonder of the world to me ever since I first witnessed his work with Snarky Puppy. He’s got some of the nimblest fingers I’ve ever seen and an all encompassing dominance over the keys that allows him to play whatever he wants, however he wants to play it.
He pulled out all of his familiar tricks for songs like Skate U when he played Flight of the Bumblebee out of nowhere during the solo part as well as playing Isn’t She Lovely much like he did in Thing of Gold when he came to the Howlin’ Wolf in New Orleans with Snarky Puppy.
Speaking of which, Thing of Gold made an entirely piano arranged appearance during last night’s show which was great as always being one of my favorite Snarky Puppy songs.
The show was one hell of a party that ran all night. Oh and Tony on the Trombone playing JDilla during a solo. That happened.
If you missed it, but you would still like to get a hold of some of the magic, you can grab his debut album 7 Summers from the iTunes Store.
