Civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his final speech, popularly titled “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop,” on April 3, 1968, the day before he was assassinated. King’s speech focused primarily on the aftermath of the Memphis Sanitation Strike, in which more than 1,000 black sanitation workers walked off the job to protest discrimination and poor working conditions.
The speech’s final sentence became the opening line of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
