NEW ORLEANS (AP) – The chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court is retiring.
Catherine “Kitty” Kimball said Wednesday that she will leave the court in January after serving for 20 years. In a statement issued by the high court, Kimball said “it is time for me to spend some quality time with my family.”
Kimball became the first woman on the Supreme Court when she was elected from the court’s Fifth District in November 1992. In January 2009, she became the court’s first female chief justice.
Prior to her election, Kimball served for 10 years as a judge in Louisiana’s 18th Judicial District, which includes Iberville, West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee parishes.
Kimball’s term runs until 2018.
