The Louisiana Sea Grant College Program has started searching for Executive Director Charles “Chuck” Wilson’s replacement as he plans to step down from the position at the end of June.
Wilson’s exit was announced Feb. 24 after he accepted a position with the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, where he will serve as chief science officer.
Similar to other search processes for University positions, a search committee has formed to choose Wilson’s successor, according to Roy Kron, Louisiana Sea Grant director of outreach and communications.
Kron said the search is internal, narrowing down potential candidates from members of the University staff and faculty and AgCenter employees. He said the committee is looking to permanently fill the position and is accepting applications until Friday.
The search committee is headed by Matthew Lee, associate vice chancellor for the University Office of Research and Economic Development.
Kron said the Louisiana Sea Grant program is one of three programs in the nation currently searching for new executive directors, including North Carolina and Rhode Island.
Though Louisiana’s program was established in 1968, there have only been two executive directors, Kron said. Wilson has held the position since 2004.
Wilson has worked at the University since 1984, serving numerous positions, such as professor and department chair. Wilson was the vice provost of academic affairs before he was promoted to Louisiana Sea Grant executive director.
