The Student Government Senate spent its Wednesday meeting approving executive staff members and committee members, debating only one of the 56 positions for nearly an hour.
The student in question was mass communication junior Drew Larose, who was appointed as director of student life and diversity by SG President Taylor Cox and Vice President Carrie Hebert.
All appointees were brought to the Temporary Rules Committee. They all were pushed to the Senate favorably, except Larose. The committee took no action on his case.
University Center for Freshman Year Senator Christian Glorioso, who sat on the committee, said he wished to take no action because of concerns about Larose’s passion for the University and his time commitments as his fraternity’s president.
“I didn’t feel that he could act in both capacities efficiently and to the level we need to expect from SG,” Glorioso said.
Other senators and Hebert argued Larose was capable for the job, despite his demeanor.
“Just because Drew may not have the bubbliest personality … I don’t think [that] disqualifies him for this position,” Hebert said.
Larose assured the Senate he would be dedicated to the position and he “understand[s] the issues that face campus organizations.”
After an hour of debate and questioning, Larose was approved unanimously, with four abstentions.
Before the Senate began approvals, it re-voted for the speaker pro tempore position due to a misunderstanding of the rules. University Center for Advising and Counseling Senator Lane Pace was elected last week. He gained the majority vote again Wednesday to secure the pro tempore position.
The Senate also approved Cox’s executive order pertaining to the SG Sponsorship Packet.
SG may now accept donations from the community for their funds in exchange for placement of company logos at SG events like Groovin’ on the Grounds and the Wellness Fair.
Cox said he and Hebert will work over the summer to collect thousands of dollars to improve the community spirit, including hanging University banners in prominent areas entering campus.
The Senate also approved the 2012-2013 SG Budget and amendments to the SG Election Code.
