The LSU lacrosse team (5-6) fell short of advancing to the semifinals of the Lone Star Alliance Conference with a 16-15 loss to Texas State (6-9) on Saturday in San Marcos, Texas.
The Tigers nearly erased a seven-goal halftime deficit with a combined eight goals by senior Jacob Most and freshman Saban Sellers. Most assisted sophomore Danny Adler with the last goal, which came with one minute left in regulation, but Texas State held on to win.
“I was really proud of the way we came back and didn’t give up,” LSU lacrosse coach Nick Joslyn said in a news release. “I liked the way we made adjustments in the second half. We just dug ourselves into too big of a hole in the second quarter. Credit goes to Texas State though, they played well. It’s a tough way to end the season, but I think our seniors can walk away with their heads held high.”
LSU struck first with a goal by Matt Jones, but Texas State scored two unanswered points to go up 2-1. Jones tied the score again, 2-2, to end the first quarter.
The second quarter was all Texas State, which scored seven straight to put the Tigers in a 9-2 hole going into halftime.
LSU’s Most and Andre McHale broke the scoring streak with a goal apiece, but Texas State countered with two more goals. The Tigers outscored Texas State, 13-7, in the second half, including three straight goals to end the game, but the deficit proved to be too much.
Goalie Rick Battista had 18 saves, while Sellers led the team with four goals and one assist.
Texas State will advance to face SMU in the semifinals.
