All official candidates of the Your LSU ticket have been banned from active and passive campaigning today and tomorrow. That’s according to LSU Student Government Commissioner of Elections Amelia Burns.
Your LSU is one of the tickets in the 2012 LSU Student Government elections. Landon Hester and Kristina Lagasse are the presidential and vice presidential candidates of Your LSU.
According to Burns, Your LSU broke election rules by misusing the official LSU Student Government logo.
Below, you can read the full text of the notification from the LSU Student Government University Court. Below that, you can read a full statement from the Your LSU campaign.
NOTICE OF PUBLIC CENSURE:
On Friday, March 30, 2012, at 10:50 pm the University Court of LSU Student Government found that Landon Hester and Kristina Lagasse, candidates for Student Government President and Vice President associated with the Your LSU 2012 ticket, misused the Student Government logo through Docket 12-02, Hardiman v. Hester and Lagasse. For this reason, the University Court found both respondents in violation of the Student Government Code of Ethics—Article I, Section 4, § C—in the LSU Student Government Bylaws, and has imposed the following sanctions according to Article IX, Section 3, § A of the Election Code:
1. Public Censure – executed by this notification for Monday, April 2, 2012 and Tuesday, April 3, 2012.
2. Restriction of active and passive campaigning of the entire Your LSU 2012 ticket and all candidates on both run-off election dates of Monday, April 2, 2012 and Tuesday, April 3, 2012.
Any questions about this notification may be directed to the University Court through Chief Justice Danielle N. Rushing.
Respectfully submitted,
Louisiana State University
STATEMENT FROM THE “YOUR LSU” CAMPAIGN:
The Your LSU ticket has been limited to no active or passive campaigning for both election days, which is a complex way of saying that we can’t actually campaign in the run-off. The University Court placed these sanctions upon the campaign after Landon Hester, presidential candidate, created a facebook collage with the student government logo in it, attempting to display pride in the organization he’s participated in for three years. We believe these sanctions placed upon the campaign over the facebook collage reach beyond the actions of the candidates involved; however, the University Court decision is final and we intend to abide by the regulations set forth. Although Your LSU, our candidates, and Landon and Kristina are still eligible for election and remain on the ballot, we are not allowed to ask for support, nor solicit any vote from students on campus. We want to provide the reasoning why we will not be campaigning, and give information to the voters so they can make an informed decision during the voting period.
