Jazz, hip-hop, ballet and modern dancing are all coming together this weekend to form LSU Theater’s final Mainstage performance of the semester: the 13th annual LSU Dance Concert.
The show features several pieces performed by University students as well as guest performances by LSU Legacy, a student hip-hop group and a tap dance ensemble.
The show’s director Molly Buchmann, chose the student choreographers from a choreography class she teaches in the fall.
“The dancers haven’t had a lot of proactive choreographing for stage performances yet,” Buchmann explained.
She said the majority of their choreographic experience comes from competitions.
While only a few students were chosen to choreograph, the remaining students, all of whom are in Buchmann’s class, dance in one another’s shows.
French senior Haley Bove is the choreographer of “Don’t Explain,” a piece featuring a cover of the Nina Simone song of the same name.
“My piece is a duet, kind of a mournful love story about the end of a relationship,” Bove said.
She said the choreography was difficult to juggle with classes, but worth it.
“It’s been hard finding the time around studying and extracurriculars,” she said. “But it’s been really enjoyable, and I’d do it all over again.”
Buchmann urged fans of dance to attend.
“Anyone who thinks they enjoy dance will find something here,” she said.
LSU Dance Concert 2012 shows at 7:30 p.m. April 28 and 2:00 and 7:30 p.m. April 29.
