About 40 students heard about false ideas of black masculinity Wednesday night at an event called “Black Masculinity in America: A Sideline Story.”
The Black Male Leadership Initiative Fellows Program, Black and Proud and the Theta Kappa chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated, hosted the event as a part of Black History Month.
Jared Avery, higher education administration graduate student, spearheaded the planning after getting the idea of discussing black masculinity from University of Pennsylvania professor Shaun Harper’s research, which studies race and gender in higher education.
Avery described the false idea of black masculinity as “an umbrella” that encompasses hyper-masculinity, hyper-sexuality and homophobia.
