Nebraska secondary coach Corey Raymond has accepted the same position at LSU, according to multiple reports.
Raymond said in an interview with the Omaha World-Herald that he turned down the LSU job once, but LSU coach Les Miles kept pursuing him.
“All of my family’s down there. That’s what swayed me,” Raymond told the World-Herald. “It wasn’t the school where I was going to be at, or who I was going to be with coaching-wise. I was in a great position at Nebraska.”
LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette tweeted Monday night that no hiring would be announced until Tuesday.
The New Iberia native will replace Ron Cooper, who departed LSU to coach defensive backs with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Raymond joined the Cornhuskers coaching staff February 2011, reuniting with former LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini. Under Raymond, the Cornhuskers secondary ranked No. 34 nationally in pass efficiency defense and No. 18 in passing yards allowed.
Raymond played for LSU from 1998-91. After a five-year career in the NFL with the New York Giants and Detroit Lions, Raymond began his coaching career as a defensive coordinator at New Iberia High School. He then spent two seasons as the defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach at Westgate High School.
Raymond returned to LSU in 2007 to serve as an assistant strength coach, then accepted a position as defensive backs coach with Utah State in 2009. Raymond spent two seasons with the Aggies, then accepted an assistant coaching position with Indiana, where he only stayed for one month before departing for Lincoln, Neb.
