When former LSU defensive tackle Michael Brockers showed up at the NFL scouting combine, he surprised many with his size.
Brockers, who completed his combine workouts Monday, weighed in at 322 pounds — 16 pounds heavier than he weighed during his final season at LSU. Local draft analyst Mike Detillier believes Brockers should shed about 10 pounds, and Brockers agrees.
“I plan on losing some weight and getting leaner, bigger and faster,” Brockers told the NFL Network.
Brockers, who said he wasn’t satisfied with his combine workout, ran the 40-yard dash in 5.36 seconds and did 19 reps at 225 pounds. He also had a 105-inch broad jump and ran the three-cone drill in 7.46 seconds.
“He moved at 322 pounds pretty well,” Detillier said. “For me, I’d get the weight down. He’s such a good player because of his athleticism that you don’t want to get too heavy.”
Detillier said Brockers cemented himself as a top-15 pick in April’s NFL Draft, but another defensive tackle may have bested him. Dontari Poe, a 346-pound defensive tackle from Memphis, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.98 seconds and recorded 44 reps at 225 pounds.
“Those two [underclassmen], Dontari in particular, really put on a show,” Detillier said.
One of Brockers’ former teammates, linebacker Ryan Baker, also completed his combine workouts Monday. Baker, who checked in at 5-foot-11 and 232 pounds, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.88 seconds and did 30 reps at 225 pounds. He also added a 34-inch vertical and 113-inch broad jump.
Detillier said Baker will likely go in the late rounds of the draft.
Tuesday will mark the final day of the NFL combine with defensive backs performing their final workouts. Former LSU players Morris Claiborne, Ron Brooks and Brandon Taylor will display their talents.
