I was working in the lab late one night…just kidding, it was the kitchen.
Ok guys, it’s that time we all knew was coming. Time for THEME SNACKS! I’m a fan of themed everything — parties, newspaper issues and especially foods.
Since Halloween is still a week away, I decided to dedicate this week’s blog to compiling the most fun looking scary snacks. Next week, we’ll tackle actually making them.
After scouring Pinterest for what felt like ten minutes but actually turned out to be two and a half hours, I think I’ve found the three most awesome snacks out there. So here we go.
Apple Smiles
You’ll need:
– Red apples
– Peanut butter
– Lemon juice
– Mini marshmallows
You’ll do:
– Slice the apple and squeeze a bit of lemon juice on each slice to keep it from turning brown and gross.
– Spread peanut butter on one side of each apple slice
– Place four marshmallows on one slice, then place another slice on top.
APPLE SMILES! I’m not sure exactly why I feel like these are Halloween-themed, they just remind me of fake teeth, which is fun. See the full recipe here: http://family.go.com/food/recipe-ak-836893-apple-smiles-t/
Spider Webs
You’ll need:
– Pretzel sticks
– White chocolate
– Chocolate chips
– Raisins
– Ziploc bag
– Wax paper
You’ll do:
– Lay out pretzel sticks on the wax paper in an arrangement that kind of looks like a star or the spokes of a wheel
– Melt the white chocolate and place it in the ziploc bag. Cut a hole in the corner of the bag and squeeze the chocolate onto the pretzel shape in three circles.
– Place raisins in the center and melt the regular chocolate chips over it to create the look of a spider.

As always, the most complicated is last.
Tombstone Cookies
You’ll need:
- 6 tablespoons butter, softened
– 1/2 cup sugar, plus extra for sprinkling cookies
– 1 large egg
– 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
– 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
– 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– Melted semisweet or bittersweet chocolate
– Chocolate pudding (packaged or homemade)
– Oreo cookies
You’ll do:
– Beat butter and sugar with an electric mixer, then beat in the egg and vanilla
– In a different bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt. Then, add to the butter mixture. Separate the resulting dough into thirds and leave it in the refrigerator for at least one hour.
– After at least one hour has passed, spread the dough and cut out tombstone shapes.
– Bake about 8-10 minutes at 400 degrees.
– Use melted chocolate in a bag to pipe the letters “RIP” onto each cookie
– Crumble an oreo cookie onto the top of a cup of pudding, then place a cookie in each cup
