A wreck has been reported at mile marker 115 of the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. Traffic near the accident has been at a standstill for more than 30 minutes.
Daily Reveille Contributing Writer Alyson Gaharan is on the bridge, speaking with Ahmad Kelly, driver for Kelly Transportation, who is radioing with truck drivers closer to the scene of the accident.
Kelly said he was told that the accident involved three semi-trucks, one carrying an unknown chemical.
According to the truck drivers near the scene, a truck traveling East on I-10 drifted across the median and collided with the chemical-carrying truck, which was traveling West. It is unknown at this time how the third truck was involved.
The drivers said the driver of the chemical-carrying truck was killed in the crash and the driver of the other truck has been airlifted from the scene.
The chemical-carrying truck is turned over, blocking off both lanes of I-10 West and part of the median. Traffic in Eastbound lanes is moving.
The truck drivers also said via radio that a hazardous material has been called. Kelly said he expects clean-up to take five or six hours.
Many drivers have turned off their vehicles and are walking on the bridge.
Mackie Hirsch, sports administration sophomore, said he was on the way to College Station, Texas for the LSU v. Texas A&M game this weekend when traffic came to a halt.
“This is gonna be a horrible next couple of hours,” he said.
