TDR: Welcome to New Orleans!
Liv & Mim: Thank you!
TDR: Have you guys ever been here before?
Liv: Yes, we have. A couple of times.
TDR: So what do you think of the city?
Liv: Love, love. I’ve actually come here on holidays before, and Mim and I were out here last year for the Britney Spears tour.
Mim: And we took some days off as well after.
Liv: We did, didn’t we?
Mim: So we got to really walk around the whole town.
Liv: And the French Quarter, and then what was that drinking area that we went to?
Mim: Bourbon? Is it Bourbon Street?
TDR: Bourbon Street, yeah.
Liv: We had a good night out on Bourbon Street.
TDR: It’s always a good night on Bourbon Street.
Liv: [laughs] It is, isn’t it?
TDR: So you mentioned Britney. You’ve worked with Britney before, haven’t you?
Liv: Yeah, well, we were on tour with her last summer for I think it was like five week or something, and then, um…
Mim: We’ve been close a few times.
Liv: Right, in the studio, but she works with producers that we don’t always work with.
TDR: Right. So you’re about to perform. Are you excited?
Liv: Yes! We love festivals. And this festival reminds us a bit of Lollapalooza, which is really, really great. Any excuse to play at festivals and we’ll be there.
TDR: Absolutely. Do you have any kind of pre-show stuff that you usually do?
Mim: Yes. We always talk about our beginning and our end of our set, and then what records we want to test out, you know.
Liv: Yeah, we want to always have a good idea of, you know, especially festival sets, because they’re different to club sets because you have less time. We play a lot of our own records so we have to space them out, and so we kind of work out where we should space them out. Especially these days, we’re singing on a lot more records so we have to really space them out because you don’t want half an hour of just our vocals. So yeah, we plan a bit of our sets.
TDR: So, for people who are not as familiar with you two, how would you describe your sound?
Mim: We’re kind of electro house, uplifting.
Liv: Electro uplifting pop house, I would say. It’s not as underground as a lot of the guys we work with. We love vocals. We started off as writers in the studio working for artists like Kesha and Kylie and David Guetta and Kelly Rowland and people like that, but our taste naturally got more and more electronic, but we still do a lot of vocals.
TDR: Yeah, I watched the video for “You’re Gonna Love Again” this morning. It’s so interesting. Could you tell me a little bit more about the single and the video and what putting that together was like?
Mim: That was our second release through EMI. They harnessed us up and we got to levitate.
Liv: We got to play stunt women.
Mim: It was our first time ever having a real stunt man around us teaching us what to do. It was a lot of fun. Videos are always a lot of fun. All of the extras, every single extra that you saw there was a fan, so the vibe on set was incredible.
TDR: You have some very good-looking fans.
Liv & Mim: [laughs] Yeah, yeah.
Liv: They’re amazing, they are.
Mim: They all did it for free. It was just lovely, an amazing energy there, because everyone was genuinely, genuinely excited.
Liv: Having a good time.
TDR: That’s awesome. So you kind of mentioned writing. What do you think has been the coolest experience you’ve had in writing and your favorite artist that you’ve worked with, or the most fun that you’ve had?
Mim: Every artist is very different, and we have fun with every single artist.
Liv: I mean, Kesha was fun because it was a different process. She wasn’t a star when we worked with her.
Mim: Oh, she was always a star, but she wasn’t known.
Liv: Right, exactly. And so it was fun. We were all broke songwriters, and she would come over to London and stay in our crappy apartment, and we would go to L.A. and stay at hers, and so it was a bonding experience.
Mim: With the rise of everything.
Liv: With the rise, yes. But then people like Kylie Minogue were fun because she’s from Melbourne where we’re from in Australia, and she lives in London, we live in London. So we bonded over being from the same town and being abroad.
Mim: And then we grew up hearing her voice on the radio, so that’s a total trip out to hear her singing our song.
Liv: And we do get to work with a lot of our friends, which every day is inspiring. Last night we were working with REHAB, we work with Afrojack, we’ve worked with David Guetta. We feel very, very lucky to work with who we have.
TDR: Definitely. I know y’all have got to run, you’re on a tight schedule, but is there anything else you want to just throw in there?
Mim: Just that we have a single coming out soon on Strictly Records called “Army” and it features Omarion. We’ve just shot that video. And we’ve also got another single coming out called “Like Home,” and we’ve done that with Nicky Romero. It’s coming out on his record label.
TDR: And the first one coming out is–
Liv: “Army.”
Mim: “Army.” So this Halloween we’re dressing up as army girls, Russian army girls, because we thought we’d get in the theme of our single.
TDR: Of course. Are y’all gonna go out at all in New Orleans tonight?
Mim: Ohhh! That’d be so fun.
Liv: No, we’re actually flying to L.A. because we’re going to play Wonderland tomorrow.
TDR: Oh, y’all are busy.
Liv: Yeah.
Mim: I would have loved to have stayed here.
Liv: Me too.
Mim: We love this city. It’s one of our favorite cities in the U.S.
TDR: That’s awesome! Y’all have to make sure you try the food before you leave.
Liv & Mim: Oh yeah, yeah!
Liv: So good. All the barbeque and everything.
TDR: I’m about to go get some myself after your set.
Liv: Well, we’ll see you in catering!
