Friday night at the Varsity featured hard hitting bass music from around the country, and an eclectic crowd of maximum rowdiness. Electronic producer and performer Figure came to Baton Rouge following the recent release of his Monsters Volume 3 album to help bring some halloween-style wobbles to an eager crowd.
Opening performances by Christopher Joseph, one of the men behind the Electronic Takeover shows, and the ever-present High Top Kicks kicked off the night in style. The smooth style of Joseph’s music helped to warm up a constantly building crowd at the event which started shortly after 9pm. A more aggressive performance from local High Top Kicks had the crowd dancing and bouncing as they played song after song with an explosive energy, showcasing many of their songs both old and new.
As Figure took the stage, the audience was bursting with excitement, and the surreal energy of the set continued until the venue turned off the sound as the crowd cheered for an encore. Hailing from Indiana, Figure has just about finished a tour that took him all over the nation. The stop in Baton Rouge had a crowd that was clearly looking for just what he had to offer, with remarkable stage presence and a never-relenting style of bass music which largely ends up in the category of drumstep.
Before the show, I had an opportunity to speak to figure on a good number of topics. We discussed his recent album release, collaborations with Bare and Del The Funky Homosapien, sampling, drumstep, hardware, scary movies, and more! Also got a little tech demo showing off just what it is the good man does behind the tables.
