The LSU women’s tennis team will see its first action of the season this weekend at the Longhorn Invitational hosted by the University of Texas.
The tournament is an individual singles and doubles event that will feature 64 players from 12 different schools including Oklahoma, TCU and West Virginia.
The Longhorn Invitational will also be the debut for new LSU coach Julia Sell, who won a national championship as a singles player for Florida in 2003. Sell was also an assistant coach for Notre Dame when the Irish appeared in back-to-back Final Fours.
“I’m really looking forward to this tournament,” Sell said. “As this is my first season with the Tigers, I have only seen [sophomore LSU tennis player] Mary Jeremiah compete in an actual tournament setting. So I am anxious to see how the team mentally approaches each match and reacts to the pressures of competition.”
The Tigers will send Jeremiah, freshman Caroline Hudson, junior Ariel Morton and freshman Ella Taylor to compete in singles and doubles.
“I’ve been very pleased so far with the commitment and work ethic this team has shown in practice over the past several weeks,” Sell said. “Our focus this fall is to improve as students and athletes every day, and this tournament provides another opportunity for growth.”
