The LSU volleyball team will have to wait another day for an opportunity at its first win of the season after falling to No. 2 Texas in straight sets (25-12, 25-19, 25-19) during the season opener at the Longhorn Classic. The Tigers never seriously threatened their hosts, only leading for a combined 14 points in the match, all of which came during a brief second-set rally. LSU didn’t eclipse the 20-point mark in any of the three sets. Nineteen hitting errors derailed any chance the Tigers had for an early-season upset, especially with four Longhorns hitting over .300 in the match. Junior middle blocker Desiree Elliot led the Tiger offense with 10 kills on 22 attempts. But, she also tied freshman middle blocker Khourtni Fears with a match-high five hitting errors. Fears and fellow freshman Cati Leak made their collegiate debuts for the Tigers, combining for 10 kills on 33 attempts. Leak also posted seven digs. Texas’ sophomore outside hitter Haley Eckerman led all players with 16 kills on 35 attempts for a .429 hitting percentage. The Tigers will search for their first win of the 2012 season when they play a double-header against No. 19 San Diego and Cal Poly on Saturday.
