Anchor [Natalie Guccione]: The Board of Regents has a new plan to improve secondary education. Reveille Radio’s Marylee Williams reports on the 21-proposal report the board sent to the legislature.
Reporter [Marylee Williams]: The Board of Regents Governance Commission unanimously approved a final report, aimed at improving post secondary education.
The Commission, an appointed committee studying the regulation of post secondary education, submitted the final report for legislative approval.
This final report lists 21 proposals to improve retention rates at collegiate institutions. These recommendations cover tuition and aid, budget, the Board of Regents authority, and methods of calculations.
One recommendation is a new funding formula that awards institutions more state funds if they achieve targets in the Granting Resources and Autonomy for Diplomas Act.
The legislature would also have to consider increasing the maximum amount for need-based GO Grants to meet fifty five percent of student need.
The 2012 Legislative session will determine the fate of the Regents’ proposals.
