It’s not as formal as the fall mass recruitment, but Greek hopefuls have a chance to join a sorority or fraternity during spring recruitment — also known as rush — which begins today for sororities.
Spring recruitment is open to any student not involved in a Greek organization, according to Angela Guillory, assistant dean of students and director of Greek Life.
The Panhellenic Council will host spring recruitment Jan. 20 through Feb. 2, while the Interfraternity Council will host its own version Jan. 30 and 31.
An informational meeting will be held in the Acadian room of the Student Union on Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. for all interested female students. Male students should attend a similar meeting Jan. 30 at 5 p.m. in the Atchafalaya room of the Union.
Greek organizations invite potential members and host their own events in a casual atmosphere, Guillory said.
“It is a great opportunity for potential new members to be exposed to Greek life in an informal way,” Guillory said. “It is a win-win for everyone.”
Guillory said an average of about 100 students partake in spring recruitment, and approximately half receive bids.
Sororities will submit their chapter size today, and if they are under average membership they are able to participate in spring recruitment, Guillory said.
The participating sororities will be posted on the Greek Life website this afternoon, Guillory said.
Finance junior and Sigma Phi Epsilon member Cameron Miller said spring recruitment is an opportunity for people who have become familiar with sororities and fraternities to join a Greek organization.
“Spring recruitment gives people who weren’t sold on it a second chance to look at the Greek system,” Miller said.
