The run no one saw coming has finally reached its end, as LSU softball loses 6-0 to defending national champion Arizona State on Saturday night in the Women’s College World Series.
The Tigers never seemed to get any offensive momentum going with all four hits recorded on the evening coming in different innings. The only time two Tigers were on base at the same time came in the fourth inning when sophomore center fielder Simone Heyward singled on a bunt and senior short stop Juliana Santos was hit by a pitch.
ASU got their offense started early when sophomore right fielder Alix Johnson hit a three-run homerun in the top of the third to give the Sun Devils a 3-0 lead.
Johnson got ASU’s offense rolling again in the fifth when a throwing error by second baseman Allison Falcon allowed Johnson to score from second.
Later in the inning, ASU senior first baseman Annie Lockwood hit a single off of LSU senior pitcher Brittany Mack, who replaced starter, junior pitcher Rachele Fico after Fico allowed four runs on the night.
The loss is the second, and inevitably final, loss for the Tigers in their third WCWS appearance in program history. The first loss came at the hands of the University of California in a 3-5 loss Thursday.
The Tigers finish the season 40-25 including a 15-13 record in Southeastern Conference play.
