The LSU women’s basketball team tied an NCAA record for the most consecutive Final Four appearances with its 56-50 win against North Carolina on Monday night in New Orleans.
The Lady Tigers’ defense shined in the contest and held the Tar Heels to 33 percent shooting from the field. North Carolina (33-3) entered the game averaging more than 80 points per game.
Senior center Sylvia Fowles led LSU (31-5) with 21 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Senior guard Quianna Chaney added 13 points, and senior guard Erica White had six of her eight points in the game’s final two minutes.
The Final Four appearance is also the first in the career of LSU coach Van Chancellor. Chancellor had previously been 0-4 in Elite Eight games.
LSU will face the winner of Tuesday’s matchup between Tennessee and Texas A&M in the Final Four, which begins Sunday in Tampa, Fla.
