Two more applicants for LSU’s next athletic director position will be considered at Monday’s 1 p.m. search committee meeting. East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Doug Moreau applied through the Atlanta-based Parker Executive search firm, while former St. Louis University Athletic Director Joe Yates applied to committee chairman Jack Weiss. The two applicants will be either eliminated or entered into the active applicants pool. Those in the pool include three internal candidates: Verge Ausberry, Mark Ewing and Herb Vincent – all LSU senior associate athletic directors. The external applicants are: Craig Angelos, Florida Atlantic athletic director; Stan Harris, former restaurant developer; Greg McGarity, University of Florida executive associate athletic director; Michael McNeely, former Indiana University athletic director; and William Weidner, former University of Central Florida deputy athletic director. Moreau, an All-American LSU football player during the 1960s, was a finalist for the athletic director position in 2001. Committee members instead chose former baseball coach Skip Bertman, who will vacate his post in June to assume a fundraising role. “Every high-pressure business has many of the same demands,” Moreau said in his application letter. He presented examples of how his legal experience can relate to athletics, writing that “overseeing and conducting the operations of the District Attorney’s office” have “similarities to competitive high-level athletics.” “Identifying the ‘real’ problem, the relevant issues, and evaluating evidence, leads to the proper solution, in law, in sports, and in life,” Moreau wrote. “The experience gained as a judicial decision maker is as good as any training that exists anywhere.” Yates served as St. Louis’ athletic director from 1988-1990. Yates worked as LSU’s sports information director and assistant athletic director in the 1980s. Yates has worked with Yates Management Group, a sports marketing company, since 1990. “Having spent over 20 years in college athletics, including five at LSU as [sports information director] and Assistant Athletic Director, I feel I have the experience to merit consideration,” he wrote in his application letter. Weiss previously said the committee aimed to have a choice by the end of March, although it appears that deadline will not be met. Weiss did not return calls before deadline.
