The homeless awareness event “Sleep in a box” began Saturday night with participants bringing their cardboard boxes on campus.
Students were only allowed to use cardboard boxes and duct tape to construct shelter to stay in for the night.
The event is sponsored by the University’s Residential Hall Association and organized by Lataro Foundation.
Dustine Lail and Nicholas Totaro, both freshmen, started “Sleep in the Box” this past year at their high school in Lafayette. This year they created the organization Lataro Foundation, which was established to benefit the 13 homeless awareness departments in Louisiana.
Although the event aims to raise homeless awareness in the state, the students were not deprived of the necessities such as food.
Totaro said two homeless women will speak Sunday at 2:30 a.m. to give testimonies of their experiences.
