LSU played its second scrimmage of spring practice Saturday in Tiger Stadium, and once again, coach Les Miles emphasized miscues.
“It’s always good to have the ones on ones because you really get to see how you’re progressing,” Miles said. “There were a lot of things we’ll be able to improve on.”
Miles called the practice “sloppy,” in particular the performance of the quarterbacks.
“We had a fumbled snap with the third team, and our young quarterbacks don’t necessarily know what to do with the ball when it’s covered,” Miles said “But that’s an age thing, and it’s certainly something we’ll address.”
The scrimmage’s focus was the ground game. The offensive backfield combined for 200 yards rushing, and junior running back Keiland Williams led all rushers with 63 yards.
Miles said he was pleased with the efforts of sophomore Richard Murphy, who gained 30 yards. Miles also said junior tailback Charles Scott injured his ankle but is not expected to miss any time.
Sophomore wide receivers Terrance Toliver and Ricky Dixon led a limited passing game with three catches each.
“Ricky Dixon made a couple of nice plays. I really enjoyed his contribution today,” Miles said. “Both [junior quarterback] Andrew Hatch and [redshirt freshman quarterback] Jarrett Lee completed the ball 10 times for 100 yards each. But this wasn’t a passing scrimmage.”
Sophomore safety Chad Jones broke up a pass and made nine tackles – two of them for loss. Senior safety Curtis Taylor added an interception.
“I thought the defensive line played better than they had in the past,” Miles said. “Guys like Chad Jones showed up today and made big plays. Curtis Taylor had a nice pick.”
Although the Tigers technically have the spring game Saturday, Miles said the spring game will not be treated like a regular season game.
“It won’t be anything like a game week,” he said. “We’re going to practice much harder, and we’ll take some days off, which we never do.”
The team has weight training today with practices scheduled Tuesday and Thursday. The spring game will be held Saturday at 5 p.m.
