The School of Veterinary Medicine may be changing its name in the near future.
A bill will be proposed to the state senate during the next regular session to change the name of the vet school to the Benjamin B. Rayburn School of Veterinary Medicine.
The Legislature regular session begins March 31. The name change will be proposed by Sen. Ben Nevers, D-Bogalusa, in senate bill No. 314.
Benjamin “Sixty” Rayburn was a member of the state legislature for 48 years. He died earlier this month. Rayburn was instrumental in obtaining money to begin the vet school.
Peter Haynes, vet school dean, said the college was not consulted about the name change.
Robert Rasmussen, assistant vice president of system relations, said the legislature can propose and pass name changes for campus buildings in this manner.
