Stanford coach Trent Johnson has made a verbal agreement to become the next head coach of the LSU men’s basketball team, according to news sources.
Johnson spent four seasons and compiled an 80-48 record as head coach at Stanford. He led the Cardinal to the Sweet 16 this past season and reached three NCAA tournaments in four seasons with Stanford.
He is replacing John Brady, who was fired in February in the midst of his 11th season at LSU.
Several calls to Stanford and LSU media relations officials were not returned.
“I don’t know anything about it,” said Stanford Senior Associate Athletic Director Earl Koberlein. “I’ve just been hearing rumors on the Internet.”
Multiple players told The Daily Reveille they had not heard about the hire, but said a team meeting has been called today for 2:15 p.m.
Junior guard Greg Terrebonne said in a text message that if the rumors are true, he is “just happy that we have a new coach, so we can start preparing ourselves to succeed next year.”
