Louisiana House Bill 734, a 5 percent tuition fee increase, passed unanimously in the House Education Committee on Tuesday.
The bill is now on its way to the House Appropriations Committee. Janis Batchelor, Appropriations Committee secretary, said the bill might be on the April 29 agenda.
House Bill 677, the operational fee increase, was expected to be heard in Tueday’s meeting, but Jackie Snowden, Education Committee secretary, said Rep. Patricia Smith, D-Baton Rouge, voluntarily deferred the bill.
Smith said the LSU System asked her to take it off Tuesday’s agenda. She said they are waiting for more support for the bill. Smith said she does not plan to reintroduce the bill to the Education Committee until she hears a response from LSU.
