The University Student Recreational Complex hosted its second annual UREC Adventure Race on Saturday morning in which 44 LSU students and Baton Rouge residents completed physical and mental challenges all over the University’s campus and the surrounding areas in order to finish.
The “Amazing Race” style competition included 15 miles of biking, three miles of running, and one and a half miles of paddling in canoes across the University Lakes.
The competitors, paired in teams of two and ranging in age from 10 to 59, raced to 17 University landmarks, such as Alex Box Stadium and the Memorial Tower, which served as checkpoints.
The participants were not informed of the race outline before-hand and had to complete challenges at each checkpoint in order to receive their next destination.
Challenges at the checkpoints included a word jumble, math problems and a race to peel and eat a banana without the use of hands.
Participants chose their own routes to the checkpoints, making strategy an important part of the race.
Walker Higgins and Denver Benton, two University alumni and physical trainers, were the first to complete the race, with a time of 1:53:02.
