The University Student Recreational Complex is currently taking applications for students interested in the student chair position of its newly-formed Advisory Board. The UREC Advisory Board, comprising student, faculty, staff and alumni representatives, will actively gather feedback from the members of the groups represented by the Board members as well as review customer concern forms. The Board will then discuss any issues or recommendations regarding operating policy, guest service standards, developmental plans and long- and short-term goals and objectives. The Board’s formal recommendations will be submitted to UREC officials. The student representatives come from Greek Affairs, Student Government, Residence Hall Association and Student Bar Association. Jarrett said the Board is intended to represent the entire University. UREC officials said they are looking for a student to run the Board who will “represent the whole student body and overall LSU community.” “We’re looking for a student leader who wants to take an active role in the current events and the future of University Recreation,” Jarrett said. “We want someone who is interested in serving LSU in a leadership role.” Jarrett said the student chair should be able to “emphasize with all opinions and create a shared vision [of the Board].” According to UREC documents, students must have a 2.0 overall GPA, full-time status and be able to dedicate a minimum of 10 hours per week to meetings and office hours. Additionally, students must be able to attend the Board meetings, which will be every third Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The deadline to apply is Feb. 27. Ashley Baudouin, mass communication junior and member of the board representing Greek Affairs, said she would like to see someone interested in fitness and health fill the position. “It should be someone who utilizes the Rec,” Baudouin said. “Why not stay a little longer when you’re there, join the Board and make influential decisions at the place you love.” Meghan Speakes, mass communication junior, thinks a student chair would be a positive addition to the Board. “I think it’s good to have student input since our fees support the UREC so much,” Speakes said. Jarrett said in addition to learning leadership skills and forming a communication network, students will also have the opportunity to travel to other universities to view their recreational complexes. Jarrett said she thinks the Board will benefit the UREC in several ways. “[The Board] is an important piece to us really being in touch with the people we serve,” Jarrett said. “The influence will be seen for a very long time.” Jarrett said before forming the Board this Spring, UREC was the only Student Auxiliary Service on campus not to have a board. The Board held its first meeting Feb. 8 and discussed ways to become more diverse. “A few members on the Board suggested inviting a representative from Multicultural Affairs,” Baudouin said. Baudouin said the first meeting was more of an orientation for the new members. “We discussed the direction the UREC wants to go and how to use the Board to implement new policies to better the Rec,” Baudouin said.
