NEW ORLEANS (AP) — It’s been a mixed year for Louisiana citrus growers, with Hurricane Gustav doing little damage to satsumas and small-variety citrus in Plaquemines Parish but hammering trees in other parts of south Louisiana.
That’s according to Louisiana State University AgCenter agents.
Alan Vaughn says the September storm knocked about 25 percent of Plaquemines Parish’s navel orange crop off trees but he says the satsuma crop appears much better than expected.
AgCenter agent Barton Joffrion says there was heavy damage to fruit and trees in parts of Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes, but that fruits that survived are of good quality. That area was hit hard by Gustav.
Vaughn says most citrus acres in the state are in Plaquemines, Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes.
