While millions of Americans flooded the polls Tuesday to vote in the presidential election, about 3,500 students took the time to participate in the Student Government fall elections.College Senators, Graduate School president and vice president, University Court Justices and four ballot initiatives were included on the ballot.Students voted against a proposed Organization Relief Fund fee increase of $3 per student every fall semester. ORF supports travel expenses for student organizations.The resolution, authored by Sen. Kelli Eason, mass communication, passed the SG Senate at the Oct. 1 meeting. Eason said the increase was designed to compensate for inflation that has occurred since the fee was implemented in 1981.Students approved the remaining three initiatives, including the amended SG Constitution and a referendum to urge the Department of Residential Life to adopt a Roommate Matching Survey to better match on-campus roommates.Three University Court Justices were disqualified for not turning in their expenditure and contribution reports by deadline.James Young, Katie Cristina and Lindsey Hardiman were elected as Court Justice by student vote. Joseph Stern will fill the last spot by default.Asim Shrestha was elected Graduate School president with 58 percent of votes. Ben Clark was elected Graduate School vice president with 68 percent of the vote.The last day to file a complaint about the elections is Friday. A run-off between Kyle Chandler and Chandni Patel for College of Arts and Sciences senator will take place Nov. 11.Taylor Craft, interim commissioner of elections, said the voter turnout was higher than he expected considering the date of the election. —-Contact Katie Kennedy at [email protected]
