The Tigers need to win their three remaining matches to make the NCAA tournament. And LSU volleyball coach Fran Flory knows there’s a target on her team’s back.”People are really shooting for us,” Flory said. The Tigers (15-9, 10-7) will try to avoid the gunfire this weekend when they play Arkansas (7-20, 4-13) at 7 p.m. on Friday and Ole Miss (12-14, 8-9) at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The Tigers only played one match last weekend, rallying to beat Auburn, 3-2, in the PMAC after falling behind 2-1.LSU swept Auburn, 3-0, in the first meeting this season Oct. 12.”Auburn came at us strong,” said junior setter Sam Dabbs. “They knew they had nothing to lose, but they could win so much pride by beating us and taking us out of a chance at getting in the tournament and a West championship.”Senior libero Elena Martinez paced the Tigers defensively with 22 digs, her eighth 20-dig performance in the past nine matches.”Elena took control and just said, ‘Hey guys, we’ve got to get it done,'” said freshman defensive specialist Lauren Waclawczyk. “What she says goes, and when she means it, you do it.”LSU and Auburn had two blocks each after three sets, but LSU out-blocked Auburn, 8-1, in the final two frames.”Our front line of defense was doing a really bad job,” Flory said. “We just became more balanced [and] did a better job of getting in front of hitters.”Flory said her team recovered a little bit after the Sunday break.”Soccer’s done with their season and we’re still in the regular season, and we started at the same time basically,” Flory said. “Fortunately for us, the break was late, but it also meant that we didn’t have a break through the middle and the crunch time.”Dabbs said LSU is dealing with aches and pains toward the end of this season.”We all recovered well and took it easy over the weekend,” Dabbs said.Waclawczyk said the Tigers are ready to play again after the break.”We’re getting anxious,” Waclawczyk said. “We’re ready to be on the road.”LSU swept Arkansas, 3-0, earlier this season in the PMAC.Flory said Arkansas’s record is lackluster because of a new coach and personnel changes on its roster.”They were struggling,” Flory said. “They’re pretty comfortable within that system right now.”LSU leads Ole Miss by 2 1/2 matches in the Southeastern Conference Western Division with three matches remaining.Ole Miss beat SEC-leading Kentucky, 3-2, on Nov. 7 at the Gillom Center in Oxford, Miss.Kentucky is 25-4 overall and 16-2 in the SEC this season.—-Contact Robert Stewart at [email protected]
