LSU will try to do some fine-tuning in the team’s final exhibition game tonight. The Lady Tigers host the Houston Jags, a traveling women’s basketball team that plays against some of the top collegiate programs, at 7 p.m. before Sunday’s season opener against No. 16 Notre Dame.LSU coach Van Chancellor said while the Jags may not practice as regularly as college teams do, their “athletic pro players” can still provide strong competition. This means the Lady Tigers must cut down on mistakes, Chancellor said.”Our two goals are to have fewer turnovers and fewer fouls,” the Hall-of-Fame coach said.Chancellor said the team has gotten “light years” better at limiting turnovers since fall practice began but still has a long way to go.LSU turned the ball over 17 times in its 68-50 exhibition victory Wednesday against Loyola New Orleans.Freshman forward LaSondra Barrett was one of only four Lady Tigers who didn’t commit a turnover in the team’s first game in the PMAC.Barrett said the turnover issue can be solved if players are just more patient.”Sometimes we end up trying to do too much,” said Barrett, who scored 11 points off the bench against Loyola. “We’re just making the same mistakes over and over again.”The Lady Tigers also committed 18 fouls Wednesday, allowing Loyola to shoot 13-of-17 from the free throw line.Senior forward Kristen Morris said defending without fouling is simply a matter of proper execution.”That’s just discipline,” Morris said. “Not allowing dribble penetration will help with the fouls.”Junior guard Allison Hightower, who led the Lady Tigers with 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting against Loyola, said the coaches have drilled them hard about clogging the lane on defense.”Coach Travis [Mays] has us focusing on our feet and not getting beat to the middle,” Hightower said.STARTERS SET . . . FOR NOWFreshman guard Destini Hughes, sophomore guard Katherine Graham, Hightower, Barrett and freshman forward Taylor Turnbow will likely be the Lady Tigers’ starting lineup tonight against Houston.Chancellor said those players are his best starting five right now, but he will keep the playing rotation flexible.”There will be multiple lineups based upon who we’re playing and who’s practicing well,” Chancellor said. “I want us to get ready to play a season.”Hightower said having several players in the mix to play big minutes is a result of the variety of talented players on the Lady Tigers’ roster.Even if the starting lineup is ambiguous, Hightower said the team will always have players who give effort.”As long as we have great effort, good things will come for us,” Hightower said.—-Contact David Harvey at [email protected]
