Presidential endorsements are coming from media outlets across the country as Election Day is just one day away. But just like any other election, The Daily Reveille has chosen not to endorse a candidate.According to core journalism principles, objectivity is the bedrock of the industry. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, we publish a staff editorial providing commentary on important issues for students. But we do not endorse candidates in any election.Media outlets showing bias in election coverage is a hot topic. They are usually knocked for being too liberal. Endorsements, in our view, could be misconstrued and said to be evidence of a newspaper’s perceived bias.”I never liked the concept of an objective newspaper flat out endorsing a candidate,” said former Daily Reveille editor-in-chief Justin Fritscher. “I can understand criticizing a politician and their policies, but to line up behind them, say this is who we want … I just don’t like it.”We agree with Fritscher and will continue the tradition of not endorsing a candidate. The Daily Reveille takes very seriously its objectivity in political coverage in all kinds of elections – Student Government, state, parish and national ones. The editors at this newspaper are always striving for objectivity. For example, we never run a photo of one candidate without the other candidate. Even for last week’s story examining where the presidential candidates stand on certain issues, an editor’s note was printed before the story saying, “McCain’s views are listed before Obama’s in this story because of the alphabetical order of their names.”The Daily Reveille has devoted tons of space to election-related content in the past few weeks and will continue to do so until Tuesday. We will let the public judge for itself on this one.But if we can offer one piece of advice – just get out and vote.—-Contact the Editorial Board at [email protected]
