BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A Baton Rouge woman has been indicted on fraud charges related to a hurricane disaster relief program.
U.S. Attorney David R. Dugas says 42-year-old Yolanda V. King was charged in a 10-count indictment with making a false claim for Hurricane Katrina disaster assistance, mail fraud, making a false writing and document and wire fraud.
The indictment alleges King created a fraudulent claim to the Federal Emergency Management Agency saying her home suffered damage from the storm that struck in Aug. 29, 2005 and that she was unemployed due to the storm. She received $6,166 for rental assistance and an unspecified amount of disaster unemployment assistance.
If convicted on all charges, King faces up to 50 years and a $1 million in fines.
