LSU’s volleyball team has had to learn to adapt to strange situations all season. After losing senior outside hitter Marina Skender to an ACL tear in spring practice, the team went through what LSU coach Fran Flory called a “grieving process.” Then, just as the team was adapting to playing without Skender, junior middle blocker Lauren DeGirolamo, a preseason All-Southeastern Conference First-Team selection, went down to an ACL and MCL tear in her knee Friday night. And now the Tigers will face another out of the ordinary challenge — playing a road match on a Wednesday night. The Tigers didn’t get much rest coming off Sunday’s victory against Arkansas. The team practiced Monday — its normal day off — and again Tuesday. The Tigers will fly to Athens, Ga., today for tonight’s match against the Bulldogs.LSU junior setter Samantha Dabbs said the team will treat tonight’s contest as a home match. “We get there and do our normal [pregame] routine. We play the match. We sweep them in three like we are planning to do, and we get on a plane and come right back home,” Dabbs said. But Dabbs said this will be no easy task.”It is very difficult to play on the road in the SEC,” Dabbs said. “Volleyball is all about mental preparation. Traveling takes a lot out of you. It is hard to not be at home and do your normal routine.”It also won’t be easy because of the lineup changes forced by DeGirolamo’s absence.”We have a lot of versatility,” Flory said. “We feel like we have a solid lineup that will be successful, but if we don’t then we can always move people around.”Flory plans to move sophomore middle blocker Tania Schatow to DeGirolamo’s position to fill the gap.She said the team may also use sophomore setter Brittney Johnson in an unusual way.”Brittney is a great offensive weapon,” Flory said. “We’ve had to hold her because we need her to set, but if we need her to hit … she’s a nice offensive threat on the right side, and we may use that.”Coming off a weekend sweep of Ole Miss and Arkansas at home, the Tigers will be looking to get their first SEC road win of the season.”It’s what we need,” Dabbs said. “We haven’t won on the road [in the SEC] yet. We’ve gotten through the difficulties … but we’re not scared anymore of being on the road.”The Bulldogs (8-9, 1-5) are coming off a 1-1 weekend homestand in which the team got its first SEC win of the season. They defeated Arkansas, 3-0, on Friday before Ole Miss swept them Sunday.LSU leads the all-time series with Georgia, 23-18. The Tigers have defeated the Bulldogs in the last five meetings. Georgia’s last victory was a sweep of LSU at home in 2004. The last eight meetings have been sweeps with LSU winning six times and Georgia twice.—-Contact Andy Schwehm at [email protected]
