Megan Falcon and Mykala Hedberg took the doubles championship at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Tournament on Monday after beating the No. 9-ranked doubles team of Anna Sydorska and Macall Harkins from TCU, 8-4. The finals win came only an hour after beating No. 9 seed Maria Babanova and Nina Munch-Soegaard of TCU, 8-3, in the semifinals. “Megan and Mykala played another outstanding match,” LSU women’s tennis coach Tony Minnis said in a news release. “They have worked hard and continue to complement each other very well on the court.”Falcon and Hedberg became the first doubles team to win the regional title under Minnis, although Falcon and then-partner Hannah Robinson advanced to the finals in 2006.”I am really happy for Megan and Mykala,” Minnis said. “They played well in this tournament and only lost a maximum of four games in a match every time. My hat is off to them for a great week of tennis.” After winning all five of their matches in the tournament, Falcon and Hedberg improved their doubles record to 11-1, 3-1 against ranked opponents.Nicole Kantor and Whitney Wolf advanced to the singles finals of their respective consolation brackets on Sunday. Falcon, ranked No. 15 in singles, fell to Munch-Soegaard (6-4, 6-4) in the quarterfinals of the main draw.Kantor defeated a pair of TCU players beating Babanova (6-4, 6-1) in the quarterfinals, then defeating Idunn Hertzberg (6-1, 6-0) in the semifinals. Wolf defeated Texas’ Stephanie Davison (6-4, 6-1) before beating Texas Tech’s Samantha VanderDrift (6-4, 6-2) in the semifinals.Kantor lost (6-2, 6-2) to Kayla Duncan of TCU in the finals of the west consolation draw Monday. Wolf was set to play Baylor’s Karolina Filipiak in the finals of the north consolation draw, but the match was canceled by Filipiak’s request not to miss any more class.
