The Lady Tigers grabbed a handful of top times Thursday, but No. 4 Florida proved to be too much as LSU fell short in a 184-105 loss.Florida touched first in every event, but winners were disqualified in the final three events. LSU coach Adam Schmitt said he was encouraged by his teams’ early showing.”This was our first chance to step up in a race, so we had to get the rust out a little bit,” Schmitt said. “We did well and had some good times.”LSU freshman Morgan McGee finished second in the 100- and 200-back in her first collegiate meet, despite earning the third and fifth fastest times, respectively, in LSU history in the two events. “I didn’t expect to go out there and swim a top-three or top-10 time,” McGee said. “I really wanted to do well and capture my personal-best times, which I did in both.”Florida junior and 2008 Olympian Gemma Spofforth captured the LSU Natatorium record in both events. Her time of 53.84 in the 100-back eclipsed Texas A&M’s Julia Wilkinson’s 54.91 in 2008. And her time of 1:57.26 in the 200 back beat former Florida swimmer Janie Wagstaff’s record, which had previously stood since 1993. LSU senior Vanessa Duenas swam the 10th fastest time in LSU history in the 200 butterfly.”It’s my last year, so I am giving it all I got,” Deunas said.Victoria Givens also swam well, taking second in a tight 200 breaststroke race. Givens traded the lead with Florida junior Kristen Beales throughout the race before being out touched at the end. “You have to keep everything in perspective of who we’re swimming against,” Schmitt said. “Florida is a great team. They are going to be one of the teams to beat in the conference this year.”The Lady Tigers head to Fayetteville, Ark., to face Arkansas on Oct. 30. —- Contact The Daily Reveille’s sports staff at [email protected]
