NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Dozens of Louisiana parishes have been designated as agricultural disaster areas by the federal government in the aftermath of hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
That announcement Monday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture makes many Louisiana farmers eligible for low-interest emergency loans.
The department approved disaster declarations for 52 of the 64 parishes requested by Governor Bobby Jindal’s administration. In a letter to Jindal, department secretary Edward Schafer said 12 parishes didn’t have production losses in amounts that would qualify them as disaster areas.
