NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A plan to turn a military base in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans into a multi-use facility — a “federal city” — is becoming a reality.
The Navy has leased the Naval Support Activity to the city for 75 years. The move comes after the state pledged $150 million to the project.
The facility was in danger of closing under the federal government’s sweeping plan to shut down old military bases. But Louisiana officials lobbied hard to keep it open under the new arrangement.
Planners say the federal city project could create 15,000 jobs.
Most of the base will be open for commercial use. But the Marine Corps will have a facility on the site.
