It’s usually wise for managers to keep their arguments in house. But I draw the line at picking on New Orleans. One of my best editors used this space exactly a week ago to question why New Orleanians say things like “brake tags” and “neutral ground.”Well it turns out the editor’s hometown of Lafayette has its quirks, too.First — what the heck is a Fun Jump?Apparently that’s what people from Lafayette call those industrial-sized inflatable playgrounds everyone loved as kids. Then when you got older, you filled it with water and soap and jumped around until two people collided and busted their heads open. But c’mon — a Fun Jump? They’re definitely known as Spacewalks. Then there’s this phrase “get down” when referring to getting out of the car.Does every redneck from Lafayette drive a jacked up Chevy truck? I’m pretty sure just saying “get OUT of the car” suffices. And when you take clean dishes out of the dishwasher and put them into a cabinet, Lafayette natives call that “saving the dishes.”What is that – like a metaphor for rescuing your dishes from the evil dishwasher and transporting them to safety in the cabinets? You save your friend from hooking up with someone ugly. You save people from drowning. You save people from burning buildings. You don’t save dishes.Brake tags and neutral grounds at least make sense. But these Lafayette-isms are totally insane. But judging by the responses from last week’s column, let me offer this disclaimer. These two columns are just playful jests, meant to poke a little fun at language using social commentary.Every hometown has its small strange habits. If that wasn’t the case then ‘home’ just wouldn’t be ‘home’ for people. And I can appreciate that. But the whole Spacewalk thing seems simple. Come on, Lafayette, you’re smarter than that.—-Contact Kyle Whitfield at [email protected]
