LSU’s 18-game home unbeaten streak came to an end Sunday at the LSU Soccer Complex.No. 6 Florida (15-2-1, 10-0) defeated the No. 13 Tigers (12-3-1, 6-3-1), 2-1, in a second-half comeback in a battle between the Southeastern Conference’s top two teams.”Florida had been down plenty of times,” said LSU coach Brian Lee. “They’re a quality team with quality players, and they’ve shown good character throughout the year to come back. They’ve done that plenty of times.”It seemed the Tigers had done enough to earn a draw, but a dramatic late-game goal by freshman forward Kelly Murphy was ruled to be offside and disallowed.”It happens when you play a good team like that. We just need to move on,” said junior midfielder Malorie Rutledge. “But I’m going to have to see the tape on that one. It looked like there were two Florida girls on the goal line with her, so I don’t know how she could have been offside.”Rutledge wasn’t the only one with questions, as the 1,367 fans in attendance voiced their displeasure to the match officials. Lee said a goal was taken away from his team in similar fashion in the Tigers’ loss to Ole Miss.”I hope [the official] was right,” Lee said. “Once before this season they’ve been wrong, and they cost us a game, and I got an apology letter. I hope today they were right.”After a physical start to the game, the Tigers struck first in the 34th minute.Rutledge found junior forward Rachel Yepez on a long pass near midfield. Yepez then broke away from two Gator defenders and calmly slotted home a shot for a 1-0 lead.”Our first half was probably the best first half we’ve played all season, mentally and physically,” Rutledge said. “Florida over-passed the ball, I intercepted it and found Yepez over the top, and she had a quality finish.”The Gators began their rally just two minutes into the second half. Florida forward Ameera Abdullah found a low cross inside the 6-yard box and poked it past LSU keeper Mo Isom to tie the score at 1.The game-winner came in the 73rd minute when Florida midfielder Tahnai Annis headed home from a seemingly impossible angle.”I’d like to see video because I’m not exactly sure how she was able to hit that angle,” Isom said. “I thought maybe ‘Did it deflect off of me? Did it deflect off one of our defenders and go in?’ But it was a clean header right into the upper 90.”With just one regular season game remaining, LSU must now turn its attention to the SEC tournament. The Tigers are poised to take the tournament’s second seed with a win against Arkansas on Friday.”We’re playing well,” Lee said. “Florida is the sixth or seventh best team in the country, and we think we’re their equal. But you’ve got to win games on top of that, you can’t just play well.”—-Contact David Helman at [email protected]
