COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — First-time starter Stephen Garcia says the Gamecocks are ready to step back into the Southeastern Conference title chase.
Garcia is to make the first start of his college career this weekend against No. 13 LSU.
The Gamecocks had struggled in SEC play, losing their first two games against Vanderbilt and Georgia. However, victory the past two weeks at Mississippi and Kentucky have put them back in the race.
Garcia said Tuesday the team can take a huge step forward by beating the defending national champions. He says the offense is improving, as is his knowledge of Steve Spurrier’s attack. Garcia came off the bench to rally South Carolina against the Wildcats last week, earning the starting job from Chris Smelley.
The Gamecocks are 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC.
