NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana’s sugar cane harvest is under way, but well behind the five-year average after last month’s hurricanes.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says just 8 percent of the crop was in, as of Sunday, compared with the five-year average of 17 percent.
Two-thirds of the crop is rated in fair or good condition; 27 percent is in poor or very poor shape.
With six days suitable for fieldwork last week, farmers also continued to harvest hay, soybeans, sweet potatoes and rice, a crop nearly completely harvested.
