Fans were able to get their first look at this season’s LSU men’s basketball team Tuesday night at the PMAC.LSU coach Trent Johnson held a Purple-Gold scrimmage game for fans and media Tuesday night. The Purple team won 46-34 in nearly 25 minutes of action.”This scrimmage showed us things we can improve on, but it also showed us some positives,” said senior guard Garrett Temple. “[It showed us] that we can execute. We got a couple of baskets out of the plays that coach had us run.”The Purple Team was comprised of players who have all started while at LSU, while the Gold Team started three freshmen alongside two seniors — guard Terry Martin and forward Quintin Thornton.Junior forward Tasmin Mitchell lead all scorers with 21 total points. Mitchell, who missed most of last season with a stress fracture in his shin, played minutes for both teams and started on the Purple Team.”I felt pretty good,” Mitchell said. “It was exciting to get back there on the floor. I told myself to go out there and just take my time.”Senior guard Marcus Thornton and senior center Chris Johnson were the next leading scorers, with 14 and 13 points, respectively for the Purple Team.Freshman forward Storm Warren led the Gold Team with seven points. Senior forward Quintin Thornton, who spent time on both teams, led all rebounders with six.Johnson said he was pleased with the offensive output but said there was room for improvement in other aspects of the game.”We shot the ball pretty well,” Trent Johnson said. “I said this about a week or two ago. I thought that I would have no concerns about the offense … The other three facets of the game, we have a ways to go.”Both teams combined for 22 turnovers while only dishing out 16 assists and compiling 10 steals. “What happened today didn’t surprise me,” Trent Johnson said, “For the most part, I thought a lot of what we saw was coming. We have to work through. They know it. They hear it every day. We’re not talented enough, and we’re not good enough just to show up.”Trent Johnson said the Purple Team’s starters — Chris Johnson, Marcus Thornton, sophomore guard Bo Spencer, Temple and Mitchell — will likely be the starters when LSU opens its season Nov. 15 against Jackson State. Two players that didn’t see action during the scrimmage were sophomore forward Garrett Green and junior guard Alex Farrer.Farrer sat out with a bruised knee, but Trent Johnson said he is optimistic he will return soon.Green remains sidelined with a back injury.”I’ve had bad luck with kids and backs,” Trent Johnson said. “I will not play a young man that size and length … with back problems.”Both the men’s and women’s teams will host the second-ever LSU Student Block Party on Wednesday. The event lasts 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Tower Drive near the Student Union.—-Contact Johanathan Brooks at [email protected]
