BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A faculty member at the LSU law school is suing the university, alleging that she has been unfairly denied promotion because of her race and that the university’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center has been rife with racist practices.
Darlene Goring, 46, the only black member of the non-visiting LSU law faculty, claims that law center Chancellor Jack Weiss while discussing minority hiring in January “noted that minority candidates are less qualified than their white counterparts and should be held to a different (inferior) standard.”
LSU has yet to respond to the lawsuit, which was filed in September in the 19th Judicial District Court. Weiss, who could not discuss specific claims, denied the accusations.
“The alleged racial discrimination is utterly false,” said Weiss, who became chancellor last year. “It also is an insult to the entire faculty of the law center.
“The complaint is littered with inaccuracies and mischaracterizations of the events in question,” Weiss said. “Far from being hostile to Professor Goring or any other person of color, the faculty of this law school is deeply committed to enhancing diversity.”
Goring’s attorney, Jill Craft of Baton Rouge, said her client essentially was punished at LSU for addressing race issues in the law center’s hiring and student transfer policies.
Goring also has filed an Equal Opportunity Employment Commission complaint.
