BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A national education group says Louisiana’s goal of a 65 percent high school graduation rate is among the lowest in the country and needs adjusting.
The Education Trust, which was established in 1990 by the American Association for Higher Education, did say seven states set lower expectations. The lowest being Nevada at 50 percent and Indiana, with a goal of 95 percent over a two-year period, set the highest standard.
But Daria Hall, assistant director for K-12 policy for the Education Trust, says the goal of Louisiana schools increasing the state’s rate by only 0.1 percent a year to be deemed successful doesn’t set a high expectation for improvement.
State and local education leaders will meet in Baton Rouge Tuesday to begin drafting a plan for decreasing the dropout rate.
