NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A federal judge has signed off on an agreement by the City of New Orleans to return hundreds of firearms that police officers confiscated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
The agreement was part of a deal to resolve a lawsuit filed by the National Rifle Association and Second Amendment Foundation.
U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier signed the pact on Thursday and issued a permanent injunction barring the city from seizing lawfully possessed firearms.
The NRA and Second Amendment Foundation agreed to drop their case if the city followed a plan for returning guns to owners who had them seized after the August 29, 2005, hurricane.
