BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Governor Bobby Jindal’s administration says a push to give a one-time salary bonus for all rank-and-file Louisiana state employees is too costly.
The State Civil Service Commission, the state’s human resources office, on Wednesday recommended a bonus of between 2 percent and 5 percent for the 59,700 workers. It would need the approval of Jindal and lawmakers to be included in the state’s budget for next year, however.
The minimum bonus would cost an estimated $48 million while the maximum would cost $120 million.
Jindal’s top budget adviser, Commissioner of Administration Angele Davis, says the administration has too many demands on state dollars to support the bonus. Instead, she says the governor will support a pay increase for state employees at the lower end of pay scales.
